Hi Im looking into buying these, maybe two, eventhough my ovens small, but Id love to be able to make two pizzas at a time. I was just wondering what to ask for. Here, we have what most of you know as quarry tiles, but we know as terracotta. Actually there is a huge variety of tiles and stones, just not sure what exactly to look for. Also, once Iv bought it, is there
The tiles make amazing pizzas. For photos see the recent thread where I posted some pics.I dont know for certain that the quarry tile is food safe, but the pizza certainly isnt on their long enough to pick up many contaminants if it is not. I probably get more exposure to lead from the clay plant pots I own.

In case you do not want to follow Altan Browns idea of a quarry tile, use other substitutes. Your best ideas can be a pizza pan, cast iron pan, or an inverted baking sheet. These are cheaper and more easily available.
Jun 30, 2008 I recently finished a project of converting a domestic electric oven into a quarry tile pizza oven. Ive been lurking around the site for a while learning and thought its time to participate. I got most of the parts from an old frigidaire electric oven. I began by making a frame to hold the quarry tiles. The metal came from an old bed frame.
Mar 09, 2013 Quarry tiles are not engineered for direct flame settings. They will crack, and, when they do, they will be structurally weakened, and be far more likely to give off shards. If youre not paying attention and a shard ends up in the pizza, it will wreak havoc on teeth if either you or your guests bite into it. Comment.

Sep 13, 2012 A pizza stone is a thick piece of metal or ceramic designed to give your oven more heat and shorter cooking times. Reduced baking times make homemade pizza better, as scott123 noted in a recent Chowhound discussion. A pizza that bakes 12 minutes or more is denser and more breadlike than one cooked quickly at a high temperature.
Dec 20, 2012 Build your pizza on an oven tray sprinkled with semolina flour. Slide your pizza from the tray onto the stone, or even easier place the tray directly onto the stone. Oct 05, 2009 Quarry tile will work, as long as it is not glazed. The cheap stones also work fine for a single pizza, or several if you allow them to recover (reheat) between pies. The problem with either quarry tile or cheap stones is THEY BREAK. I simply got tired of replacing broken tiles and cheap stones and bought a fibrament stone. I am very happy with it.
Aug 13, 2012 Right now I am using an unsealed quarry tile (11.5x11.5x0.75) as a heat diffuser and it has stood up well to 30 hours of direct heat. It is a little charred on the bottom but still sound. From what I can find on the internet it is made of the same stuff pizza stones are made of. The metal pizza pan is gone.

Jan 02, 2010 pizza pan/cookie sheet or pizza stone, its all good in my book. i do prefer the crust that comes from a pizza stone. we have an oneida pizza stone, but you can pic them up at most wal-marts for about 8 bucks. i intended to get some that were 18 square last time we were in great falls, but they had none at the time. home depot or lowes can sell you un-glazed
